Imagine facing jail time for protecting your child from bullying?
That’s the situation one parent finds themselves in after placing a digital recorder in her daughters backpack to help catch her daughters bullies on tape. The mother claims that this was done in an attempt to prove to the school that the bullying was still taking place and was reportedly done as a last resort after the school refused to return her phone calls or emails.
The student was moved to another classroom after the tape recorder was discovered and the mother was hit with charges a month later. The charges include one count of felony use of a device to intercept oral communication and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If convicted of these crimes, the parent could face up to five years in jail.
If I’m not getting an answer from you, what am I left to do?” the mother who was identified in the article as Sarah Simms told reporters about the incident,”“I tried to be fair, but it’s not fair. There is nothing fair about this.” The bullying is alleged to have taken place at Ocean View Elementary school and has apparently not been addressed as of yet.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Should the mother be charged for trying to protect her daugther? What would you do if you were in a similar situation and your child was being bullied at school? Let us know in the comments below!
